Definition and example
Futures margin is a performance guarantee rather than a partial purchase of the underlying asset. Initial and maintenance requirements differ, and an intermediary may require more than the exchange. Amounts can change.
Synthetic example: an exercise requires 100 units of margin and estimates a 20-unit loss for a specified move. These figures serve different purposes. Depositing 100 does not guarantee a maximum loss of 100. Check the product’s requirements and procedures before interpreting liquidation; a demonstration may simplify them.
