Carbon performance varies with pore structure, water chemistry, competing compounds, contact time and dose. “Carbon” is not one identical material. A product should document its intended use; claims from drinking-water treatment cannot be transferred blindly to every aquarium compound.
A selective resin can be easier to evaluate when a measured target exists. Zeolite and other exchange media also depend on ionic conditions, so freshwater instructions may not transfer to brackish or marine water.

Carbon may be useful after a medication course, but running it during treatment may reduce the active substance. Other media can alter nutrients or hardness. Read both the treatment and media instructions, and do not combine them simply because spare basket space exists.
