Track the waste
Food enters the aquarium, is eaten or decays, and eventually contributes particles and dissolved nitrogen. Flow can bring particles to a sponge or pad. Biofilm then processes some dissolved nitrogenous waste. Neither process makes matter disappear: cleaning, water changes and plant removal are common export routes.
