Gross, net and system volume: use the right litres for the decision

A nominal 40-gallon or 180-litre tank does not hold that much water once glass, air gap, substrate and hardscape are considered. Different decisions may also need different volume definitions.

Choose the denominator deliberately

Display net volume is useful for circulation inside the tank. Total system volume may be relevant when a treatment reaches a sump or reservoir. Water-change percentage is best based on water actually removed and replaced. Naming the denominator prevents quiet calculation errors.

Substrate slopes, porous rock and hollow decor make visual subtraction uncertain. A defensible interval is more useful than an answer with two false decimal places.

Improve the estimate over time

During first fill, log measured buckets or a flow-meter total. In an established tank, compare a known withdrawal with the resulting water-level change. That creates a tank-specific calibration without dismantling it.

For sensitive dosing, follow the product or veterinary instruction and use the water volume it defines. If uncertainty could make the dose unsafe, resolve it rather than hiding it behind a generic ten-percent deduction.
