Manage the waterfall
The return can agitate the surface and aid gas exchange. A larger drop can also create noise, salt creep, evaporation or unwanted CO₂ loss. Raising the water near the return lip usually softens the fall.
Measure rear clearance before buying. Lids, bracing and thick rims can interfere with the body or intake tube even when the volume rating appears suitable.
Avoid the all-in-one cartridge trap
Where the design allows, retain a permanent sponge or biological stage while changing only exhausted target media. A schedule based solely on cartridge marketing can waste usable material and disturb biofilm.
Unplug and reconnect the unit during commissioning according to its manual. Confirm it refills and flows without manual intervention, or document the exact recovery procedure.
