Finally fit every full social group into the tank. Three token shoals are not equivalent to one secure shoal, and litres do not describe bottom territory or uninterrupted swimming length. Leave capacity for growth, maintenance error and temporary isolation.

Work through a concrete example
Consider a mature, long aquarium with moderately soft water. A proper group of neon tetras and a group of bronze corydoras may overlap, but the plan still needs suitable substrate, a shared temperature, quiet feeding at the bottom and enough open length. Add those conditions to the matrix.
Now propose a nocturnal predator or a territorial cichlid. Re-run adult mouth size, breeding territory and lights-out activity. If success depends on the predator never noticing a smaller fish, or on one animal never breeding, the combination fails before purchase.

During the first days log breathing, colour, fin condition, feeding position, hiding and pursuit. Repeat the audit after several weeks and at sexual maturity. A calm dealer tank and peaceful juveniles do not prove adult compatibility.
Separate fish when pursuit is persistent, feeding is blocked, injury develops or an animal remains abnormally hidden. Test water at the same time because environmental stress can alter behaviour. Do not add more fish as a distraction until the cause and available space are understood.
