List exact species, adult size, social number, temperature, water chemistry, swimming zone and flow tolerance. Compare the complete groups, not one specimen of each. Test the source water before selecting animals; repeatedly forcing unsuitable water is less stable than choosing a compatible plan.
Translate the brief into usable tank length and floor area, not volume alone. Add filtration access, intake safety, a lid where appropriate and an emergency destination. If the adult community cannot fit or one species needs a conflicting environment, resolve that now.

Measure the whole installation
The load is the aquarium, water, glass, substrate, rock, cabinet and equipment together. Use a level, purpose-rated support in accordance with tank and stand instructions. Seek competent structural advice where floor capacity or a large installation is uncertain.
Measure doors and working clearances as carefully as the tank. Canister lids, hoses, valves and plugs must remain reachable. Plan the route used for water changes and protect the installation from direct sun, radiators, impacts and enclosed heat around pumps or power supplies.

Keep connections away from splash and flood zones, form a drip loop in every cable and use intact equipment intended for aquarium use. The fixed electrical installation and protection must comply with local requirements. Never reach into water when an electrical fault, cracked heater or wet socket is suspected.
Mark plugs so filtration is not accidentally left off. Position heater, intake and return so routine water changes do not expose equipment that must remain submerged. Secure hoses without tight bends and leave joints visible enough to inspect for moisture.

Run a controlled leak test, dry every external surface and recheck seams, valves, bulkheads and the cabinet over time. Then run the complete system, purge air, confirm temperature and trace circulation with harmless particles. Adjust dead zones before decor becomes difficult to move.
Switch the power off deliberately. A sump must contain drain-back; a canister or hang-on filter must restart as its manual describes; no heater or pump should run dry. Mark the highest safe level and repeat the test after any plumbing change.
