Protect livestock first
If breathing is rapid, raise aeration and address water quality. Inspect for dead fish or snails, food, decaying plants and filter flow.
Do not lean into enclosed sumps or containers to identify gases; ventilate the room.
Remove the cause gradually
Siphon reachable waste and make a suitable water change. Service a loaded mechanical stage while keeping biological media wet.
If smell returns, log feeding, settling areas and equipment stops to expose the pattern.
