Conventional and reverse flow
Conventional flow pulls water down through gravel and up the lifts. Reverse flow pushes prefiltered water beneath the plate, potentially discouraging solids from entering but requiring a separate mechanical prefilter.
Fine sand can migrate or restrict slots; very coarse gravel admits large debris. Substrate selection is therefore a filter specification, not merely an aesthetic choice.
