Wet–dry trickle filters: oxygen-rich biofilm with evaporation attached

A trickle filter spreads water as a film over ventilated media. Direct air contact keeps oxygen availability high and exchanges dissolved gases.

Air contact is both benefit and cost

Trickling can maintain aerobic nitrification and degas CO₂. That may be valuable in high-load systems and undesirable in injected-CO₂ planted displays. Evaporation also concentrates dissolved salts.

Headline media volume is meaningless if spray bars or plates create preferential channels. Inspect the wetting pattern and keep orifices accessible.

Keep solids upstream

Mechanical prefiltration prevents organic coatings and blocked distribution. Enclose splash and sound while preserving ventilation; a sealed wet box defeats part of the design.

Nitrification still tends to end at nitrate. A trickle tower does not remove the need for nutrient export and load control.
